Subject: UFWW Message: The Freedom Foundation's Personal Information Requests
Date: January 13th 2020

Dear Colleague,

The Freedom Foundation is an organization dedicated to undermining workers’ rights. They have requested your personal information from the state for this purpose, with the intention of getting people to drop out of the union. The personal information they are requesting from employers includes names, birthdates, work locations, salary, work email addresses, and more.

AFT Washington sought and won an injunction to stop the release of your personal information because it potentially puts members who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking at risk. We now have until March 31st to identify such members and provide those names to the respondent to the request for information so those members’ information is removed.

In addition to this, we are working on legislation that would protect all of our members from disclosure of some personal information. Watch for the opportunity to help pass HB 1888 in the next few weeks.

If you are a survivor of domestic violence, sexual harassment, or stalking, or have a family member who is, AFT Washington can collect your information anonymously and forward it to the state so that your information is not released. You can initiate contact with AFT Washington by visiting our anonymous reporting form at https://leadernet.aft.org/webform/private-reporting-and-contact-request-form. There are instructions on that page, with two contact options to suit your preference.

You must be able to provide one of the following:

1.     A police report indicating that the employee or employee’s family member was a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking;

2.     A court order protecting or separating the employee or employee’s family member from the perpetrator of the act of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, or other evidence from the court or the prosecuting attorney that the employee or employee’s family member appeared, or is scheduled to appear, in court in connection with an incident of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking;

3.     Documentation that the employee or the employee’s family member is a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, from any of the following persons from whom the employee or employee’s family member sought assistance in addressing the domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking: An advocate for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking; an attorney; a member of the clergy; or a medical or other professional;

4.     An employee’s written statement that the employee or the employee’s family member is a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking and that the leave taken was for one of the purposes described in RCW 49.76.030 or the safety accommodation requested pursuant to RCW 49.76.115 is to protect the employee from domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking; or

5.     A court-issued temporary protection order or anti-harassment order.

If you have any questions or concerns, you may also contact us through the anonymous form linked above, or you can contact James To, Operations Manager, at jto@PROTECTED.
