Dear Colleagues,
We write with an update on Western and higher education in the current legislative budget process. Both the Washington State House of Representatives and the Washington State Senate have now released their budget proposals for the 2021-2023 biennium. Neither of these proposals include any cuts to Western’s state appropriation for 2021-23. Neither proposal includes any employee furloughs and both proposals include all the compensation funding from the 2019-21 biennium.
The state budget has still not been finalized. The house and the senate will now begin the process of reconciling their proposals and negotiating a final budget. But the fact that neither proposal includes any cuts to Western’s state appropriation, makes it very likely that there will be no cuts to Western’s state appropriation for the 2021-23 biennium. Now that the legislative process is concluding, UFWW and the WWU administration will resume bargaining for faculty salary increases.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Ricardo Lopez-Pedreros, President, United Faculty of Western Washington
Jeff Young, President, WWU Faculty Senate
Bill Lyne, President, United Faculty of Washington State
